The 21-year-old was walking home late last night when he was set upon by a man in Mill Street.

The man shouted at him before carrying out the assault, punching him in the head and kneeing him in the stomach.

The attacker then ran off up St John's Hill leaving the victim collapsed on the ground. Members of the public came to his aid and called paramedics, although not seriously hurt he suffered a gash to the forehead and a sore jaw.

The assailant was described as being about 5ft 5ins to 5ft 8ins tall, of chubby build and was wearing a blue or grey horizontally striped hoody and jeans.

Police Constable Catherine Rapson, one of the investigating officers, said the assault appeared to be unprovoked.

"It happened between 11.15pm and 11.45pm last night and I am appealing for anyone who saw what happened, or who knows the identity of the offender, to contact Bridgnorth police station on 101."
