Detectives have appealed for witnesses after a man was found dead in a field in Market Drayton.

Man Found Dead In Market Drayton field

Officers were called to Berrisford Road at about 1pm yesterday, following a concern for welfare report from a member of the public.

The man, who is in his 40s, was found close to where the canal aqueduct crosses Berrisford Road and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Inspector Andy Parsons, who is leading the investigation, said at this stage the man's death was being treated as unexplained.

"A post mortem is due to be carried out by a Home Office pathologist later today to establish a cause of death," he said.

"I urge anyone who may have been in the area, perhaps using the canal towpath across the aqueduct or the steps leading up to it from Berrisford Road, between about 7pm on Wednesday 29 August and 1pm on Thursday 30 August 2012 to contact police on 101."

Berrisford Road was closed and the scene cordoned off while police worked at the scene. Forensic officers have also been in attendance.

Formal identification has not yet taken place but the man is believed to be local to Market Drayton and his family has been informed.

Anyone who might have information that might help the police investigation is asked to contact police on 101.
