Thousands expected at Newport Nocturne
Spectators and cyclists will heading to Newport this evening as biking enthusiasts jump on the saddle to take part in the high speed bi-annual racing event from 6.30-10pm.

First held in 1989, The Newport Nocturne has been known to attract crowds of 15,000. Not only will the night riders be pounding their pedals down the flood lit Newport High Street, free family entertainment and live music will be available.
Over 20 years, this well known event has been a popular fixture on the British cycling calendar. This year’s race is set to be more popular than ever; with interest further sparked by the recent success of the British cycling team that scooped several gold medals at this year’s London 2012 Olympic Games.
This year’s Newport Nocturne is an event that is part of The Games and Me programme, which helps to make sure that local people have their own experience of the Olympic Games.
Councillor Arnold England, cabinet member for Leisure and Well-being, said: “The Newport Nocturne really is a fantastic event for all the family. Not very often we get to see hundreds of high speed cyclists race through the streets of the old market town under street lamps and industrial floodlighting.
“It’s an experience not to be missed and great evening out for the family. After watching Olympians such as Bradley Wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy scoop gold medals at London 2012 The Newport Nocturne is an event that truly brings the Olympic fever home.”
