Speed enforcement to begin on Wenlock Road in Shrewsbury
A new mobile speed enforcement site is being launched on the A458 Wenlock Road in Shrewsbury, following concerns raised by the local community about the speed of traffic along the road.

The Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia is launching the new site next week as part of its Community Concern programme, which aims to respond to community requests for speed enforcement. The A458 is a busy route with high levels of vehicle and pedestrian traffic and concerns were raised by residents through the local councillor and the local policing team, who brought it to the attention of the Safer Roads Partnership.
Anna Higgins, Communications Manager at the Safer Roads Partnership said “Data collected by the partnership has highlighted a compliance problem on the A458 Wenlock Road and we hope the new site will improve this and encourage drivers to stick to the 30mph limit. The data collected indicates that at least three out of ten drivers are breaking the speed limit and 15% of vehicles are travelling above 37.1mph. The site will support our core speed enforcement camera on the nearby London Road and we hope this will improve driver compliance throughout the whole local area and make the roads safer for all those who use them.”
Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said “Hopefully this new site will encourage drivers to keep to the speed limit along this stretch of road, making it safer for all who use it.”
Jon Tandy and Liz Parsons, Shropshire councillors for Bayston Hill, Column and Sutton said “We would like to thank the Safer Roads Partnership and the police and to welcome this initiative to lower speed on Wenlock Road, particularly because of nearby school and nursery sites, as well as the many residential properties.”
The new site will be operational for at least six months and data will be collected during this time to assess the impact of our enforcement on speeds and driver behaviour.
