A fuel buying scheme launched only one year ago to help save people money by buying in bulk has been hailed a great success.

Shropshire fuel buying scheme celebrates 500th member

Hosted by Shropshire Rural Community Council, the Oil Buying Scheme has saved individuals, businesses and communities in the county over £30,000 in just 12 months.

Chief executive of Shropshire RCC Julia Baron said:

"We have now signed up our 500th member to the scheme and to celebrate this impressive milestone we have offered a free membership to that lucky person and presented him with a certificate."

The winner was Christopher Gerrard, of Lower Perthy, Ellesmere, who commented:

"I heard about the scheme from friends, did the maths and then signed up straight away as it is such a good deal and I expect to make a great saving over this coming winter."

Julia continued:

"We have a network of volunteers throughout the county who co-ordinate local groups in their respective hamlets and villages, then the total order is placed by us, thereby passing on bulk buy discount savings to our members.

"As the scheme continues to grow we hope to develop and incorporate other products such as coal, wood, LPG and even electricity into the bulk buying programme, offering even more savings to the people of Shropshire."

Further information on the fuel buying scheme can be obtained from the Rural Community Council via email at elizabeth.thain@shropshire-rcc.org.uk. or by phoning 01743 342167.
