Police have issued details of a former Shropshire publican thought to have gone on the run after being suspected of staging a burglary at his pub.

Police hunt for former Shrewsbury pub landlord

John Cattermole, who kept the Monkmoor Hotel on Monkmoor Road, Shrewsbury, was under investigation when he disappeared more than two years ago.

He was arrested on 25 April 2010 on suspicion of theft and perverting the course of justice just a few hours after reporting the pub burgled and £2,800 stolen together with spirits worth £1,500.

Cattermole was given police bail for a month and was due to report to Shrewsbury police station on 26 May. He never appeared.

Since then, extensive inquiries have failed to trace him. Police believe he has gone into hiding and could be anywhere in the country.

The investigating officer, PC Jason Tierney is hoping that issuing his picture and details will lead to his whereabouts.

"I am hoping he will be recognised and appealing for any information which will lead me to Mr Cattermole".

He said: "After failing to appear on his bail date in May 2010, he was listed as a wanted person. Extensive inquiries with other police forces and other agencies, have all proved negative. He could be working in the licensed trade elsewhere in the country and hopefully someone will be able to identify him and get in touch."

Cattermole is aged 53, about 5ft 7ins tall, of heavy build with short brown hair. Information concerning his whereabouts can be forwarded to West Mercia Police by calling 0300 333 3000, or passed to the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

In the initial burglary report, Cattermole claimed an empty beer keg was used to smash a window by intruders who stole cash from an office and spirits from the bar.

PC Tierney added: "He was arrested on suspicion of theft from his employer and for perverting the course of justice. He was interviewed and then given police bail while our inquiries continued but in the meantime, left the area and has not been located since."
