Police in Telford are appealing for witnesses after a teenage girl was assaulted in Station Road, Madeley on Monday.

Teenage girl assaulted in Madeley

Sometime between 5.30pm and 5.50pm, two 16-year-olds - a boy and a girl - became involved in a verbal altercation.

During the altercation the boy grabbed the girl by her hair and she responded by pushing him away and walking off.

The boy went after the girl and then hit her in the stomach. She tried to move away again but he then hit her in the back.

A police spokesman said:

"Having been hit for a second time the girl spotted a man walking down the street and made her way towards him. This caused the 16-year-old boy to leave the scene, although he continued to shout abuse at the girl as he made off.

"Once the boy had left the scene the girl immediately made her way home and contacted the police.

"Although the 16-year-old girl suffered only minor injuries as a result of this incident, police are very keen to hear from anyone who witnessed it.

"Investigating officers are particularly keen to trace the man the girl saw walking down Station Road at the time the incident occurred as it is possible he may be a key witness to what actually occurred.

"Anyone who witnessed this incident, or who has information about it, is asked to contact police in Telford on 101 or 0300 333 3000, quoting reference number 536S 101212.

"Alternatively, please remember Crimestoppers can also be called anonymously on 0800 555 111 if you'd rather leave information without getting directly involved yourself."
