Telford police are appealing for witnesses after a robbery at the Co-Op supermarket on Bagley Drive earlier this morning.

Staff threatened in early morning robbery at Wellington supermarket

Staff were left shocked and shaken after three men wearing balaclavas entered the shop and threatened two members of staff with a Conducted Energy Device of some sort - essentially a device that discharges an electric current.

The weapon was used briefly on a male member of staff before the men then tied both staff members up and stole the keys to the safe.

The robbery took place between 5.45am and 6.13am at the Co-Op store on Bagley Drive, Wellington, the men used the keys to open the safe and then stole everything from inside.

Once they had taken the contents of the safe the three offenders fled the scene via the back door and made off.

Police say at this stage it is not clear exactly what was stolen as a result of this robbery.

Speaking about this incident, Detective Inspector Billy Scott, who is leading the investigation, said:

"This appears to be a carefully planned robbery - because of the tactics used and the time of day it occurred - and the two staff members have been left extremely shaken by it. We are currently in the process of taking detailed statements from them.

"However, the three men have initially been described as being white, aged in their late 20s or early 30s, as wearing dark clothing and as possibly having Wolverhampton accents.

"The scene of the robbery has been cordoned off and forensic officers are currently examining the shop for possible evidence that could help us identify the robbers.

"We are also carrying out house-to-house enquiries in the area and I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to anyone who may have information about this robbery to come forward.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen any suspicious behaviour in the Bagley Drive area prior to the robbery this morning and are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may be able to give us information about any vehicle that could be linked to this incident.

"We have been told a vehicle may have sped away from the scene at just after 6.13am and there is the possibility this could have been used by the robbers.

"Anyone who witnessed this incident, or who may have information about it, is asked to contact police in Telford on 101 or 0300 333 3000, quoting incident number 67S 181212.

"Alternatively, please remember Crimestoppers can also be called anonymously on 0800 555 111 if you'd rather leave information without getting directly involved yourself."
