Work starts on second phase of Telford to Stafford cycleway

Telford & Wrekin Council has started work on the second phase of a new cycle way, which will ultimately link Telford with Stafford via Newport.

Work starts on second phase of Telford to Stafford cycleway

The council completed work earlier this year to improve the surface of the railway line between the border with Staffordshire and the old railway bridge which is situated 200 metres to the east of the junction of the A41 and the A518.

Now a 300m long bituminous surface cycleway is currently being laid down adjacent to the A41 then across the island on to the A518 and around the corner in Audley Avenue.

These works will last 11 weeks and temporary traffic management is in place, reducing the carriageway down to one lane on the approaches to the A41/A518 roundabout.

Shortly after the work is finished, the council will connect the new cycleway to the 1km of stone track that was completed earlier this year.

Councillor Richard Overton, cabinet member with special responsibility for Borough Towns Development, said: “This is the latest phase of a major project to link Telford with the north eastern edge of the borough for cyclists.

“We are committed to developing means of sustainable transport around the borough and the new cycleway will provide an extremely useful link and make it a lot safer for cyclists in that part of the borough.”
