Police have released a CCTV image of two men who were with two others that broke into Shrewsbury's riverboat and tried to start the engines.

CCTV released following Shrewsbury riverboat break in

Police Constable Adrian Davies, who is investigating the incident from Saturday 15th December 2012, said had the group managed to start The Sabrina, which is moored beside the Welsh Bridge in Victoria Quay, the results could have been "catastrophic".

"Not only have they broken several maritime laws, they also committed theft and criminal damage by stealing a pair of binoculars and a life buoy and vandalising a door," he said.

"Had they actually managed to get the boat started and moving, the results could have been catastrophic as the river was very high and they would likely have crashed it.

"This was an incredibly stupid thing to do and could very well have resulted in people, including themselves, being seriously hurt or worse."

The two, who were caught on CCTV from the boat, were part of a larger group of four or five in Victoria Quay, having come from the direction of The Quarry shortly before the break-in at about 11.20pm.

Two other men involved, who were the ones who actually tried to start the boat, are described as white, in their 20s or 30s, with short dark hair and both wearing blue jumpers and jeans. One had a slightly heavier than average build.

Anyone who recognises the two men or has any information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101.

Information can also be passed on anonymously via the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111, where operators do not even take your name.
