Two people suffered head injuries following a disorder that broke out in Wellington on New Year's Eve.

Two suffer injuries following incident in Wellington

Sometime between 9pm and 10pm a man and a woman - who are both aged 42 - were walking from Haygate Road to Wellington town centre when a large group of young men approached them.

One of the men from the group barged into the 42-year-old man and a fight then broke out as the man attempted to defend himself.

The disorder went on for some time and continued into the Market Square.

As a result of this disorder both 42-year-olds suffered head injuries that appeared to suggest they had been struck with a glass or sharp object of some sort.

A police spokesman said:

"It was busy in Wellington on New Year's Eve and we believe there may be a number of potential witnesses who saw this disorder.

"We would ask anyone who saw disorder in Wellington on Monday night - especially if it appeared to involve a group of young men and a couple in their 40s - to come forward and speak to us.

"Anyone who may have witnessed any of this disorder is asked to call police on 101 or 0300 333 3000, quoting incident number 558S 311212.

"Alternatively, please remember Crimestoppers can also be called anonymously on 0800 555 111 if you'd rather leave information without getting directly involved yourself."
