New Telford school to be opened by Mickey Bushell
Paralympic gold medallist Mickey Bushell is to officially open the new Hollinswood Primary School this morning.
The school has been created by the merger of the former Hollinswood Junior and Infant Schools, following the resignation of the infant school head teacher.
The opening is expected to start at 11am with Mickey cutting a ribbon and spending some time meeting pupils of the school and showing them his gold medal.
Head teacher Glenn Atkinson said: “The school is very much looking forward to the opening of Hollinswood Primary School and Nursery and we are delighted that Mickey has agreed to open the new school.
“Mickey has been a good friend to the school for a number of years and I also knew him when he was a pupil at Holmer Lake Primary.
“We believe the merger of the two schools will result in improved attainment, staff development, pooled expertise and knowledge, one central management structure and increased curriculum co-ordination.”
Pupils will all have new racing green uniform, complete with a new logo designed by a pupil following a competition led by the school council.
The logo represents three pieces of a jigsaw representing the joining together of three stages of the school, including Foundation, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two.
Telford & Wrekin Council is currently working closely with Mr Atkinson on ways of linking the two school sites although this is not likely to be in place until after the initial opening date of January 2013.
Councillor Paul Watling, cabinet member for Children, Young People and Families, said: "The merger of two schools is an exciting time but not without it's challenges and I am confident that we have the right leadership and staff to bring about real improvements for all pupils of the new school.
"I am especially delighted that a role model and sporting hero such as Mickey Bushell is giving up his time to open the new school. Micky is an inspiration to young people and I know the children will enjoy meeting him."
