Musical students from Shrewsbury Sixth Form College have taken to the stage to help rejuvenate an underused public venue in the town.

Shrewsbury music students revive community bandstand

Five acts from the college were given the opportunity to showcase their talents as part of plans to re-establish the Quarry bandstand. The bandstand has been re-instated as part of a project that saw members of the Shrewsbury Town Centre Residents Association submit a bid for funds from Shropshire Council’s Local Joint Committee, to host a variety of local music acts.

The bandstand hosted a variety of musical genres for all tastes, as well as five acts from the college, Jake Chesworth, Not Completely Blonde, Polly & The Wolf, Ella McDonald, and Martha’s Trio, who have used the venue as a the perfect platform to showcase their talents.

Amanda Jones, Member of STCRA, and an integral part of the bandstand project, said: “We felt the bandstand should be a main focal point for the Quarry, but it was being dramatically underutilised, so we decided to bid for funds to re-establish it as an entertainment venue. Shrewsbury Sixth Form College is such an integral educational establishment in the town, it seemed only right that we invited the students to perform, and so far we have received a fantastic response.”

Martin Ward, Principal of Shrewsbury Sixth Form College, said: “We are delighted the students have been involved in a project that has seen the reinstatement of one of the main features in The Quarry. We have many musically talented students at the college, and this has been a great way for them to demonstrate their abilities to the local residents of Shrewsbury.”

Shrewsbury Sixth Form College was established in 1981 and offers an extensive range of full-time courses for over 1,500 students aged 16-19 years. The College aims to provide teaching and learning of the highest quality and provides a stimulating, supportive and encouraging environment ensuring it creates the ideal bridge between school and work or higher education.
