Family receives compensation for man who died during clinical trial
The family of a man who died during a routine clinical trial at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry has today received an undisclosed settlement.
Luigi Belcuore from Studley, Warwickshire, was involved in a clinical trial and was having an operation for a worn cartilage when it went drastically wrong in 2009.
An inquest into Mr Belcuore's death in March 2011 found that air had been injected into his knee joint by the surgeon causing a massive embolism (air bubble) at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, Shropshire.
The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, which was ordered to pay the undisclosed sum, has previously apologised to the family.
In a statement, a spokesman for the hospital trust said: "The Trust made an early admission of liability and the parties' lawyers have been working together to achieve settlement for Mrs Belcuore and her children which has now been approved by the court.
"The Trust deeply regrets the tragic loss of Mr Belcuore's life and offers its sincere apologies to Mrs Belcuore and her family and would like to wish them well for the future."
