Plaque commemorates Percy Thrower’s 100th birthday
A commemorative plaque has been mounted on the former Shrewsbury home of Percy Thrower today to mark what would have been his 100th birthday.

As Park Superintendent for Shrewsbury Quarry Park from 1946 – 1974, and horticultural advisor to Shrewsbury Flower Show for over 40 years, Percy Thrower is one of the town’s most treasured and best known figures. The plaque has been placed on Quarry Lodge, the former home of the Thrower family and the headquarters of Shropshire Horticultural Society, to mark his life and dedication to the town’s horticulture.
Ann Kirkham, youngest daughter of Percy Thrower, said: “I am very proud of my father’s legacy and the plaque is a lovely way to recognise his commitment to the Flower Show.”
Leanne Garvey, granddaughter of Percy Thrower, said: “Shrewsbury Flower Show was so important to my grandfather’s, so we are delighted that his contribution to the Show, and Shrewsbury as a whole, has been marked in this way today.”
“He would have been very proud of the way the Show has evolved over the years.”
Brian Goodwin, Chairman of Shropshire Horticultural Society, said: “Percy Thrower has left a brilliant legacy for the county, and the horticultural industry, in Shrewsbury Flower Show. We are delighted that the Show continues to improve year on year and build on the foundations that Percy, and the rest of the Society, have built.”
