Police recovered a stolen caravan after a concerned motorist spotted it being towed in a dangerous manner on the A5 between Shrewsbury and Oswestry.

Stolen caravan recovered following call from motorist

A car driver, who was travelling behind the caravan late last night, was concerned about it swerving erratically across the road and because it was not displaying lights.

Officers responded and traced the caravan being towed by a car on the north-bound carriageway just south of Oswestry.

It overturned in the road as officers arrived and the car driver was arrested on suspicion of theft.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “We very much appreciate the alert given by the caller. As a result of their information we were able to locate the vehicle and arrest the suspect.

“The police actively encourage members of the public in Shropshire to call on 101 if they have information about criminal actively or suspect someone is about to commit a crime. And if they believe a crime such as burglary is in progress, call 999.

“By receiving an immediate call we can check-out what’s happening without delay.

The £8,000 touring caravan had been stolen from the driveway of a house in Shrewsbury earlier in the evening.

A 29-year-old man from North Wales was taken into custody at Shrewsbury police station and later charged with theft of the caravan. He was also charged with driving without due care, failing to stop for policeand driving without insurance.

The man was given bail with conditions to appear before Shrewsbury magistrates on February 21.
