Shropshire Horticultural Society has announced a strong financial position at its Annual General Meeting as it enters planning for the 2013 Shrewsbury Flower Show.

Shropshire Horticultural Society announces strong financial position

Gross revenue from Shrewsbury Flower Show income streams increased by £40,000 from the previous year, with Society Treasurer, Ann Tudor, stating: “I am pleased to report an ongoing and sound financial position for the Society. We are able to deliver our activities within our income and have continued to protect our strong financial base”.

Chairman Brian Goodwin also congratulated organisers on new initiatives brought in for the 2012 Shrewsbury Flower Show, including a members’ preview evening before the Show opened to the public. He said of the event: “The support for the members’ preview evening was a very happy surprise, and functions such as this will increase in importance as time goes by.

“Our members are the core of our society, and their ongoing support makes our initiatives possible.”

More than 50 members of the Society came together at Shrewsbury’s Shirehall Council Chamber for the AGM, which also saw Mrs Donna Hamer named as the new Society Chairman, succeeding Brian Goodwin who has held the post since 2011.

Of the Society’s charitable donations, Chairman Brian Goodwin, said: “Our customary donations totalled £39,000, with our largest single donation to St Alkmund's Church for £10,000 to replace one of the leaded glass windows as part of the church's refurbishment programme.

“However, as ever, our most notable charitable activity has been the delivery of the 2012 Shrewsbury Flower Show. Delivering the Show is the fulfilment of our primary charitable objective, that of promoting horticultural education. It therefore remains the focal point of our activity in financial terms, and quite rightly so.”

In conclusion, Mrs Tudor said: “The very stable financial base which we have established gives us the confidence to continue to deliver successful shows. Our commitment to maintaining this financial stability will see the Society through many years of activity going forward.”

The 2013 Shrewsbury Flower Show takes place on the 9th and 10th of August.
