Detectives in North Shropshire have appealed for witnesses after three men were arrested on suspicion of robbing another in a supermarket car park.

Three arrested on suspicion of Market Drayton car park robbery

The victim reported to police that he had been assaulted and his Apple iPhone stolen outside Sainsbury’s Local in Shrewsbury Road, Market Drayton at about 10pm on Monday.

The offenders arrived in a black Vauxhall Astra and the passenger is reported to have grabbed the phone from the victim, who said he was punched in the face when he refused to let go of the phone.

He was then dragged along a short distance as the offenders drove off, causing him to fall to the ground.

Shortly after 12.30am, police looking for the offending vehicle stopped a black Vauxhall Astra in the Wellington area and all three occupants arrested on suspicion of robbery. They have been interviewed and released on police bail while enquiries continue.

Several mobile phones were seized following a search of the vehicle, which has been recovered for forensic examination.

The victim was treated in hospital for extensive bruising and grazing but was fortunately not seriously injured and released a couple of hours later.

Detective Sergeant Mat Crisp, who is overseeing the investigation, said he was keen to hear from anyone who might have witnessed the robbery take place.

“The suspects, three Asian males, reportedly initially drove past Sainsbury’s in the Astra towards the One Stop, before turning around and heading back at about 10pm,” he said.

“Shrewsbury Road is relatively busy even so late at night so it is possibly somebody saw what happened and I would urge them to contact police on 101.”
