Shrewsbury awarded £10,000 from Portas Town Team Partner programme
Shrewsbury has been awarded £10,000 as part of a national programme to boost town centres.

The town has become part of the Portas Town Team Partner programme, which was launched by the Government to support those towns which were not chosen to be part of the Portas Pilot scheme.
Town Team Partners will receive backing from a multi-million pound support programme to help put elements of their plans into action, as well as £10,000 funding through teams’ local councils.
Town Team partners will have access to direct mentoring and visits from a range of retail experts, regular meetings with other Town Teams to share lessons learned, tips and ideas, and an online community to receive advice and information from retail experts.
To access this support, MPs of unsuccessful Portas Pilot applicant towns had to register for support.
The £10,000 funding will be used to develop an understanding of the visitor profile of Shrewsbury which will, in turn, inform more strategic planning around tourism and visitor numbers.
Daniel Kawczynski, MP said: “We have one of the most attractive and historic town centres in the Country I was delighted that the application I submitted to the Government has resulted in £10,000 of funding for Shrewsbury Town Council. I was very pleased the Government recognised the excellent work the Town Council, under the leadership of Councillor Peter Nutting, are already doing, and I know this additional funding will help the Council understand how our town centre is used, informing future decisions that shape our town centre for my constituents and the thousands of visiting tourists.”
Peter Nutting, Leader of Shrewsbury Town Council said: “We're delighted that Shrewsbury’s application for the Town Team Partner funding has been successful. Naturally we were disappointed not to be chosen as a Portas pilot, but there is great enthusiasm in the town to work more collectively to support both the retail and tourism sectors. This funding can only be good news for the continued vibrancy of the town centre. Many thanks to our MP for submitting the application on our behalf.”
