Contract to build new Brookside shops awarded by council
Telford & Wrekin Council has awarded a £1.2m contract to construct new shop units at the centre of a key New Town estate to Pave Aways Ltd.

The development will see new shops built as the first phase of a £6m scheme to regenerate Brookside Local Centre after the estate was selected by the council as a key pilot ward for regeneration.
The scheme has been developed in close partnership with residents of the estate.
Brookside is also to be visited next week by Hilary Benn MP, the Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, as an example of a Co-operative Council in action.
The visit will take place on Thursday February 21 between 11am and 1pm and will be hosted by Telford MP David Wright and Telford & Wrekin Council leader Kuldip Sahota.
Councillor Shaun Davies, the council’s cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services and Co-operative Council, is to lead a tour of Brookside local centre before hosting a meeting between Mr Benn and local residents – some of whom have been closely involved in helping to shape the scheme.
Mr Benn will also meet one of Telford and Wrekin’s four Parish Environmental Action Teams to hear about their work.
At 12.15pm, the group will go to the Sambrook Centre in Stirchley – which is named after the late Telford & Wrekin Council member Ute Sambrook.
A tour of this building will be led by Councillor Arnold England, the council’s cabinet member for Leisure and Well-being, before Mr Benn meets an invited audience for a question and answer session.
Steven Owen, Managing Director of the newly announced main contractor Pave Aways Ltd, said: “We are delighted to be announced as the main contractor for the development of new shops in Brookside local centre.”
Councillor Richard Overton, cabinet member with special responsibility for Borough Towns Development, said: “This is a very exciting time for Brookside with the most significant investment in the estate being made in a generation.
“Our work with residents including the Brookside Improvement Group is a prime example of how a Co-operative Council can make a difference.
“It is obviously pleasing that Hilary Benn has come to visit the estate at this exciting stage and we are looking forward to showing him how Brookside will benefit from this significant investment going forward.”
The Council has already carried out extensive regeneration works of Woodside and Sutton Hill local centres.
