Local businesses and organisations across Telford and Wrekin are working together to promote and support the Fairtrade campaign.

Telford and Wrekin Fairtrade Alliance to launch officially

In the build up to Fairtrade Fortnight (25 February – 10 March 2013), a new partnership, called the Telford and Wrekin Fairtrade Alliance, will be officially launched at Harper Adams University on 22 February 2013 from 6pm to 7.30pm.

There will be guest speakers, information sharing and an opportunity to see how different people/organisations are supporting the campaign in the borough.

This event will kick start a number of activities that the partners will be organising as part of Fairtrade Fortnight 2013. Details of these can be found on the Council’s Fairtrade web pages at www.telford.gov.uk/fairtrade

Co-operative working is at the heart of Fairtrade and the new Alliance will be committed to doing as much as it can to support and promote the campaign across the borough.

Many of the products like tea, coffee, fruit and cotton come from farmers and workers in the developing world, yet growers of these goods find it very hard to cover basic living costs due to the tariffs and inequalities of the international trading system. By supporting Fairtrade a difference can be made to these people’s lives.

One of the partner organisations is Telford & Wrekin Council. Cllr Veronica Fletcher, Fairtrade Champion, said: “It is wonderful to see so many people working together to support Fairtrade. We are working really hard to create a Fairtrade borough and our aim is to achieve Fairtrade Status for Telford and Wrekin over the next few years.”
