Police are appealing for information after eight headstones were knocked over and damaged at Shrewsbury Cemetery in Longden Road.

Headstones damaged in Shrewsbury Cemetery

The damage was discovered by Shropshire Council maintenance staff last Thursday and is likely to have been caused at some point earlier in the week.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “It’s possible a vehicle caused the damage although there is no vehicular access in the area where the headstones were damaged.

“The damage is quite extensive and we are appealing for witnesses or for any information concerning the identity of those responsible.

“Anyone who can help the investigation should call Shrewsbury police station on 101 or contact the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.”

Some of the headstones are owned by Shropshire Council and some are still tended by family members.

A storage compound at the cemetery belonging to Shrewsbury Town Council was broken into overnight on Wednesday and may be linked to the damage. Nothing was stolen during the breakin.
