Police in Telford have renewed their appeal for witnesses after an assault that happened in Newport at the end of last year.

Police renew witness appeal following Newport assault

The incident occurred in the Central Square nightclub in The Square in the early hours of Sunday 9 December 2013, when sometime between 1am and 1.30am, when a verbal altercation occurred involving a number of people.

The victim – a 35-year-old man – stepped into the altercation to calm a woman down but then, without warning, he was grabbed around the neck by an unknown man and punched in the face.

A number of people then grabbed the victim and dragged him out of the bar area. The victim was pushed to the floor and then punched and kicked a number of times to his body and head.

A police spokesman said: “After being punched and kicked a number of times the victim was then dragged to his feet and ejected from the club. Once outside the club the victim approached a patrolling police officer and reported the assault.

“As a result of this incident the victim – who is white, around 5ft 10inches tall and was wearing a dark blue jacket and brown jeans – suffered a number of cuts to his head, body and face and a number of bruises to his body.

“The man that first attacked the victim is described as being white, aged in his mid to late 20s, as being around 5ft 8inches tall and as having an average build. He is also described as having dark hair and as wearing dark clothes over a white t-shirt.

“Officers investigating this incident remain keen to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident, particularly anyone who was stood at the bar who may have seen the victim being dragged away after trying to calm down the woman.

"Anyone who has information about this incident is asked to contact PC 3784 Becky McLean in Telford on 101 or 0300 333 3000, quoting reference number 22GB/83353A/12.

"Alternatively, please remember Crimestoppers can also be called anonymously on 0800 555 111 if you'd rather leave information without getting directly involved yourself."
