Telford & Wrekin Council has pledged to work even more closely with the military in the borough, following the announcement that the Army will make its Donnington Barracks its West Midlands headquarters.

Council to forge closer links with military following Army restructure

Council leader Kuldip Sahota said: “It’s sad news that Copthorne Barracks in Shrewsbury is to close, however we are glad that the Army has chosen to remain in the area and in so doing to strengthen its presence in Telford.

“We understand that some of the staff from Shrewsbury, around 80 civilian and military personnel, will transfer to Donnington in 2015 and this will become the new West Midlands HQ.

“This will help strengthen the ties between this borough and the military and the Council will continue to work very closely with the MoD to develop and further secure the military's presence in the borough.”

In December, Telford & Wrekin Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant which is a voluntary statement of mutual support between the town’s population and the Armed Forces.
