Police officers have arrested a man in Much Wenlock who they believed was armed with a firearm.

Man arrested following firearms incident in Much Wenlock

Officers patrolling in High Causeway were threatened by a man who appeared to be armed with a handgun at around 4.10pm on Sunday afternoon.

Armed officers and dog units were called in and at 4.25pm, the man was approached as he attempted to enter a property in Stretton Road.

He appeared to threaten police officers with a handgun and a shot was fired by an armed officer. The round did not hit the man and he was arrested shortly after being tackled by a police dog.

A man in his 50s from Telford is currently in custody at Malinsgate Police Station in Telford and a handgun has been recovered at the scene.

A large police presence remains on the ground in Much Wenlock as investigations into the incident continues and to reassure residents.

As in all such firearms incidents, the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
