Telford’s Sikh community holds first ever Nagar Kirtan
Telford’s Sikh community is holding its first ever Nagar Kirtan today with a procession from Hadley to Oakengates.
The procession involves singing of holy hymns throughout a community. Today’s Nagar Kirtan is being held to celebrate Vaisakhi, the festival that celebrates the founding of the Sikh community.
The procession will take place between 11am and 2pm and will start its journey at Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Hadley, making its way to Oakengates Sikh Gurdwara and then back to Hadley.
A series of roads will be briefly closed to allow the procession to take place.
Hadley Park Road, Leegate Avenue, Britannia Way, Castle Street, Trench Lock, Sommerfield Road, Hadley Road, Bridge Street, Church Parade, Hayward Parade, Priory Road and Wombridge Road will only be closed while the procession passes. Marshalls will then re-open the roads to motorists.
Councillor Hilda Rhodes, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Transport and Community Protection, said: “As a Co-operative Council, we have been working closely with Telford’s Sikh community to enable this event to take place and have facilitated the road closures.
“The aim is to achieve better awareness of the Sikh faith within other communities and everyone is welcome to join in.
“I would like to thank residents in advance for their patience while roads close and hope that the event enables people to learn together about each other’s beliefs and cultures.”
