They were formally identified as Kevin Thomas Charles Byrne (48) and his wife Carol Louise Byrne (49), of Hazelmere Estate, Rhayader, Powys.

Mr Byrne was riding and his wife was pillion passenger when their black Yamaha V-Max motorcycle was involved in a head-on collision with a black Vauxhall Astra hatchback shortly before 12.20pm yesterday on the A458 at Rowton, Halfway House, between Shrewsbury and Welshpool.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The couple were travelling towards Welshpool and the car in the opposite direction towards Shrewsbury. The male driver of the Vauxhall and two women passengers received minor injuries.

Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses.
