An 18-year-old man remains in police custody on suspicion of murder following the death of a man in Oswestry, as a post mortem examination showed the cause of death was a single stab wound to the abdomen.

Police renew witness appeal over Oswestry murder

Police were called to the car park in Lord Street at about 8.20pm yesterday evening, following reports a man had suffered a serious puncture wound to the stomach. He died in hospital shortly after 10pm that same night.

A post mortem examination was carried out this afternoon but formal identification of the victim, who is believed to be in his early 20s, had yet to be carried out.

Detective Inspector Steve Tonks, who is leading the murder investigation, renewed an appeal for any witnesses to the incident or the events leading up to it to contact police on 101.

The suspect was arrested in the Llansilin area, just across the border in Powys, at about 3am this morning.

“Clearly there are several hours between the victim being injured and the suspect being arrested and I am keen to trace his movements during that time,” said DI Tonks.

“The area where this incident took place was still busy during that evening, as was the neighbouring recreation ground and we still want to hear from anybody who might have seen this incident who has not yet spoken to police.

“An 18-year-old man remains in police custody and is due to be interviewed this evening.”

One half of the car park in Lord Street has now been reopened, however the other half remains cordoned off while police investigations continue.

Police can be contacted on 101.
