Council marks International Workers' Memorial Day
Shropshire Council flags will be flying at half-mast today to mark International Workers' Memorial Day.
International Workers' Memorial Day is held on 28 April every year, the day commemorates workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell through their work.
With the news from Bangladesh this week of a building collapse that killed at least 350 workers in Dhaka, the importance of ensuring that workers are adequately protected and are able to work in a safe environment is in the spotlight.
Work related deaths and major injuries are not exclusive to developing countries and the latest information available from the Health and Safety Executive reveal that in the first three quarters of the last financial year there were 192 deaths in the United Kingdom.
Most recently in Shropshire a man died whilst working on a farm at Lynn, near Newport. The contractor had been carrying out drainage work on the farm when the accident happened.
