Kitchen caddies to boost south Shropshire food recycling

Households in Bishop’s Castle, and the surrounding villages of Clun, Marton, Chirbury and Worthern, are to be provided with a kitchen caddy to encourage them to make full use of the area’s new food recycling service.

Everyone in this area can already add food waste to their garden waste, as it goes to a specialist in-vessel composting facility to make high quality compost – the type you buy from garden centres.

The caddies, which will be delivered to households from Thursday 16 May, enable people to collect their food waste before putting it into the garden waste bin. Each caddy comes with an instruction leaflet and a starter pack of special compostable liners to make it easy for residents to separate food waste in the kitchen.

The aim is that people will use the new caddies to collect up all their kitchen food waste (including tea bags, plate scrapings, peelings and leftovers) to keep it separate from the other rubbish which goes for disposal.

The new food waste recycling service is being implemented by Shropshire Council and their waste contractor Veolia.

Dr Larry Wolfe, Shropshire Council’s head of waste management, said:

“I’m delighted that we’re making it even easier for residents to reduce waste to landfill. By encouraging more households in south Shropshire to add food waste into their garden bins, we can reduce the amount of waste which goes to landfill, which will save taxpayers money and protect the environment.”

Mark Hunter, Head of Collections for Veolia, added:

“We are delivering a kitchen caddy, a roll of compostable liners and an instruction leaflet to each household in Bishops Castle from Thursday 16 May. The leaflet explains everything about how the service works.”
