Shrewsbury MP welcomes draft bill on EU referendum
Shrewsbury's MP has today welcomed an announcement that the Prime Minister will publish a draft Parliamentary Bill guaranteeing a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU by 2017.

Daniel Kawczynski welcomed the draft bill which will be laid in the next Parliament by a Conservative Government, legislating for a referendum on the UK’s relationship with the EU. This follows the announcement made in January by the Prime Minister that the next Conservative Manifesto in 2015 will ask for a mandate from the British people for a Conservative Government to negotiate a new settlement with the UK's European partners in the next Parliament, followed by an in-out referendum that will take place within the first half of the next Parliament.
In welcoming the announcement, Daniel said ‘Anyone in this country born after 1957 has not had a vote on Britain’s membership with the European Union. Even still, the Europe Union of today is almost unrecognisable compared to the Common Market that 67% of voters supported in 1975. I strongly believe therefore that the British people should be given a say on whether they desire to remain in the European Union.
In addition to the Prime Minister’s commitment that a Conservative Government will hold an in out referendum on our re-negotiated relationship with the EU, this draft bill again shows whilst we can’t pass legislation as a Coalition Government, we are committed to enshrining this referendum by 2017 in legislation.”
