New Mayor of Shrewsbury Jon Tandy takes office
The new Mayor of Shrewsbury has pledged to boost employment prospects in the town and drive forward the local economy during his term of office.

Councillor Jon Tandy was elected Mayor of Shrewsbury at the annual meeting of Shrewsbury Town Council last night.
The Mayor-making ceremony, which was held at Theatre Severn, saw Councillor Tandy take over the role of civic leader from former Mayor, Councillor Keith Roberts.
Councillor Beverley Baker was also appointed as Deputy Mayor.
Councillor Tandy said he would be seeking out investment from big companies in a bid to boost Shrewsbury’s manufacturing sector.
“The town has suffered several setbacks recently,” he said.
“The closure of Shrewsbury Prison and planned closure of the Royal Mail sorting offices, the downgrading of Copthorne Barracks – all of which have left so many families facing an uncertain future. But I have a bigger vision for Shrewsbury. I want to look at a 10 year plan to build a stronger economy for our town. Shrewsbury people need real jobs. I will be looking to attract quality manufacturers to invest in our town.”
Councillor Tandy also thanked outgoing Mayor, Councillor Keith Roberts, for his year in office, as well as passing a vote of thanks to outgoing Councillors Dean Carroll, Andrew Wagner, David Farmer, Jackie Brennand and Tony Durnell.
Councillor Tandy will now be officially sworn in at a civic service held at St Chad’s Church on Sunday.
The service will start at 10am and will be preceded by a parade from the castle to St Chad’s, departing at approximately 9.45am, by way of Castle Street, Pride Hill, Shoplatch, Bellstone, St. John’s Hill and St. Chad’s Terrace, led by the band 1119 (Shrewsbury) Squadron Air Training Corps.
Members of the public are welcome to attend.
Following the church service the traditional Loving Cup ceremony will take place at which the Mayor will be invited to drink from the Loving Cup and toast the Queen and town. The congregation will then be invited to share the toast.
Following the Loving Cup Ceremony all guests are invited to join the Mayor and Mayoress for coffee and biscuits at St Chads Church Hall.
