Police investigating the disappearance of teenager Georgia Williams are following up a sighting “of potential significance” after a number of calls were received in response to an appeal on BBC’s Crimewatch programme last night.

Crimewatch plea brings new information in search for missing Georgia Williams

Telford and Wrekin Commander, Superintendent Nav Malik, said the sighting concerned a silver Toyota Hiace 300 GS panel van, registration CX06 ASV, on Monday evening. It was within the period between 5pm and 10.30pm which is of particular interest to the investigation team as they try to piece together the van’s movements.

The van was being driven by a 22-year-old Telford man who is currently being questioned on suspicion of murder following the disappearance of 17-year-old Georgia, from Wellington, who was last seen on Sunday evening.

Supt Malik said: “I cannot go into detail at this time but the sighting of the van is of potential significance and we are following up on that today along with another three sightings of the van which were phoned in after Crimewatch.

“Since our investigation was launched on Wednesday the incident room has received more than 100 messages with information in response to our appeals for sightings of Georgia and the van. They have come from a wide area along the route we know the van took from Shropshire through North Wales and Cheshire to Scotland and even further afield.

“All calls are being prioritised and followed up and we are extremely grateful for the response we have had and the fact that so many people genuinely want to help in the search for Georgia Williams.

“One call could make all the difference and as we have already mentioned the current focus of our appeals is on sightings of that silver Toyota Hiace which we know was heading towards the main arterial routes from the Wrexham area at about 5pm on Monday. We also know that at about 10.30pm the vehicle was at Deeside, Queensferry, Cheshire, heading north.”

“If you know anything at all please call our incident room number on 0800 056 0944.

“Details can also be passed on anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
