The Mayor of Wem has laid a ceremonial brick in a development of affordable and energy efficient new homes in the town.

First bricks laid for new affordable homes in Wem

The nine properties are being built by social landlord, Meres and Mosses Housing Association, which is part of Shropshire Housing Group, at the Saxonfields development, on Isherwood Way, in the centre of Wem.

Mayor Connie Grainger signalled the official start to the building work by putting in place a ceremonial brick, on Tuesday.

A mix of two and three-bedroom homes, the construction is being carried out by Whitchurch-based Hawk Developments, on behalf of Meres and Mosses Housing Association. It’s the first time the two organisations have worked together and once the homes have been completed they will be available for rent.

Paul Sutton, executive director for assets and development at Shropshire Housing Group, said: "Building new homes within our market towns which people can afford to live in is an important part of our mission. They are practical places for families to live, they can keep transport costs to a minimum and they support the thriving life in Shropshire's historic towns.

"We are very grateful to the Mayor for showing her support and we're very pleased to be working with Hawk Developments for the first time as it is a local company which has been part of this community for many years."

The new affordable homes in Wem are due to be completed in October.
