A road collision near Bridgnorth yesterday in which an elderly man died has now claimed the life of his wife who was driving their car when it left the road and crashed into a tree.

The woman, aged 70, died in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham this afternoon.

Her husband, also aged 70, died at the scene of the collision which happened near Alveley on the A442 Bridgnorth to Kidderminster shortly after 5pm yesterday.

Their silver Toyota Rav 4 was travelling towards Bridgnorth when it veered across the road into a tree. No other vehicle is thought to have been involved.

Post mortems are expected to be carried out on Wednesday and formal identification is likely to be made on Thursday.

Shropshire coroner Mr John Ellery has been informed and an inquest will be opened on Friday or early next week.

Meanwhile, police are continuing to investigate the circumstances and are anxious to trace any witnesses.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “We want to hear from anyone who was in the Alveley area at around 5pm yesterday who may have seen either the collision or spotted the silver coloured 4x4 being driven by the lady beforehand.

“A full investigation is being carried out and anyone who can assist is asked to contact Shrewsbury or Bridgnorth police stations by calling 101 or 0800 555 111.”
