The couple were travelling on the A442 at around 5.10pm yesterday when their silver Toyota Rav 4 left the road and hit a tree near Alveley.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said:
“The passenger in the car, a man, was in cardiac arrest and the driver, a woman was unconscious.
“Ambulance crews immediately started emergency treatment, but unfortunately, despite the best efforts of medics, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.
“The woman, believed to be around 70 years old, suffered multiple serious injuries and received emergency treatment at the scene. She was anaesthetised by the Doctor and airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Major Trauma Unit for further treatment.
“The Hospital had been pre alerted to the woman’s arrival and her serious injuries.
“Unfortunately, at the time of the woman’s arrival at hospital her injuries were considered life threatening.”
The couple, both believed to be aged 70, have not been named and are not thought to be local to Shropshire.
The man is expected to be formally identified later in the week following a post mortem.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances and have said no other vehicle is believed to have been involved.
A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “We are anxious to hear from anyone who was in that area at around 5pm yesterday who may have seen either the collision or the silver coloured 4x4 being driven by the lady beforehand.
“The vehicle was travelling north on the main road towards Bridgnorth. As it left the speed restrictions at Alveley, it veered across the road and struck a large tree.
“A full investigation is being carried out and anyone who can assist is asked to contact Shrewsbury or Bridgnorth police stations by calling 101 or 0800 555 111.”
The coroner for Shropshire Mr John Ellery has been informed and an inquest will be opened in due course.
