Telford & Wrekin pupils take part in safety event
Almost 2,000 Telford and Wrekin year six children are set to attend a 13-day event at Buildwas Abbey starting today.
Crucial Crew aims to raise children’s awareness of important safety issues, encouraging them to think about their own and others safety and guiding them on what to do in a number of potentially unsafe situations.
Crucial Crew is organised and coordinated by Telford & Wrekin Council and the Safer Communities Partnership with other agencies.
West Mercia Police, Shropshire Fire and Rescue, Dogs Trust, British Red Cross, Royal Life Saving Society, Western Power, EON and Telford & Wrekin Council are all getting involved with Crucial Crew, by delivering scenarios that the children will take part in that will highlight specific areas of safety.
Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for Customer Services, Libraries and Transport, said: “Crucial Crew provides year 6 children in the borough with key skills and information to be able to not only deal with unsafe situations, but also spot them and avoid them.
“It’s a critical age where the children will shortly be attending secondary school and will perhaps be travelling further and more independently than before and may be entrusted with more responsibility at home.
“It’s essential that we equip them with the knowledge to deal with a range of situations that they might encounter either now or in the future and it’s great that so many partners have signed up to make Crucial Crew a success.
“I’d like to thank each and every one of those partners for their support.”
Crucial Crew has been made possible with funding from EON, a number of local Parish Councils and the Police & Crime Commissioner.
Accidents are one of the main causes of childhood death in the UK. Child Safety Week is the Child Accident Prevention Trust’s (CAPT) flagship annual community education campaign, raising awareness of serious childhood accidents and how to prevent them, without wrapping children in cotton wool.
Child Safety Week 2013 runs from Monday 24 to Sunday 30 June and this year’s theme is ‘Be a Safety Hero’. The Child Accident Prevention Trust message for Child Safety Week is: You don’t need to be super human to be a safety hero. It’s the small things that you do that can stop children suffering serious harm.
