Telford & Wrekin Council today welcomed an apparent first commitment from the Government to build the M54/M6/M6 Toll Link Road – and called for work to start as soon as possible.

Telford & Wrekin Council welcomes Toll Link pledge

A 75 page document issued by Her Majesty’s Treasury titled Investing In Britain’s Future gives a caveated commitment to building the road – which is seen as key for the future prosperity of Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire.

The reference to the M54/M6 Toll Link road comes in a section titled “road schemes which the Government is committed to funding subject to finalisation of options and agreement being reached on developer contributions.”

Councillor Bill McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Finance and Enterprise, said: “We very much welcome what appears to be first public commitment by the Government to building the M54/M6 Toll link road and we hope that the link will be built as soon as resources allow.

“This is a key issue for Telford & Wrekin Council. We have made a commitment in the past month to proactively attract inward investment into the borough with our Invest In Telford programme and improving the transport links to the rest of the country is an important part of that.

“In Telford, we already have congestion-free roads, three railway stations and a railfreight terminal so we have our own house in order from a transport perspective.

“We have lobbied extensively for this to happen and we are pleased that it looks like we have been at least partly listened to. We will continue to lobby for a proper link to be established from the M54 to the M6 going northwards and the M6 Toll.”
