£200m masterplan for Telford Town Centre welcomed by Council
A new scheme that would see up to £200 million of regeneration of Telford Shopping Centre and provide another massive boost for the borough is being ‘enthusiastically welcomed’ by Telford & Wrekin Council.
Plans put forward by Sovereign Land, which asset manages Telford Shopping Centre, would be in addition to the Council-led £250 million Southwater development, the first phase of which opens early next year with a new hotel, 11 screen cinema and eight top restaurant names.
Sovereign Land will tomorrow begin a public consultation on its masterplan for the Town Centre, which is next to the Southwater development. The event runs from Thursday until Saturday in a unit in the shopping centre’s Ashdown Lane next to the Aroma cafe bar
The scheme would see an investment of up to £200 million in the Shopping Centre and would include: New retail, catering and leisure uses, pedestrian routes with public squares, active external frontages with new landmark buildings and improved town gateways.
Improved links with Southwater, Telford Town Park, Telford station, the rest of the town centre and beyond would also be created.
The scheme would complement the Council’s proposals to make the town centre Box Road two-way, including making Coach Central more pedestrian friendly.
Sovereign, Land which is behind a number of other significant retail and leisure developments in the UK such as Cardiff Bay’s Mermaid Quay, say that following the consultation, outline plans will be submitted and subject to consent, work could start early next year focussing first on replacing the current ASDA supermarket.
Council leader Kuldip Sahota said: “This is more excellent news for the borough’s economy.
“Sovereign’s masterplan outlines a really exciting vision that can transform Telford Shopping Centre.
“This, combined with the excellent leisure offer in Southwater including bars, restaurants, an 11 screen cinema, hotel and refurbished ice rink, would help make this borough an even more attractive destination for visitors.
“I urge as many people to come down and give their views on this masterplan. It’s a very exciting time and these ideas, subject to planning approval, would give Telford a mix of leisure and retail that most destinations would die for.
“It is a further demonstration of how the Council’s Invest in Telford initiative is bearing fruit, attracting investment, growth and jobs to the borough.”
