Major highways works to take place in Wellington

A public drop in session is to be held next week as Telford & Wrekin Council plans six weeks of highways improvements in Wellington town centre.

Major highways works to take place in Wellington

The session will be an opportunity for people to talk to council officers and the contractors who will be carrying out the work, which will start on 22 July.

Plans detailing the work and how it will be phased within the overall programme will be on display during the drop in session between 1-8pm in the Council Chamber at Wellington Civic Offices on Tuesday 16 July.

More than £14m is being invested this year in improving, repairing and making safer roads and streets in Telford and Wrekin.

As part of this, Telford & Wrekin Council is carrying out extensive maintenance works around Wellington Town Centre during the schools summer break.

Works will be taking place in and around the following locations:
- Apley Avenue incorporating the roundabout outside the Blessed Robert Johnson Catholic College
- Whitchurch Road/Park Street/King Street between Apley Avenue and Vineyard Road
- Vineyard Road incorporating the roundabout outside Morrisons
- Bridge Road between Vineyard Road and Haygate Road
- Victoria Road incorporating the roundabouts with King Street, Glebe Street and Wrekin Road
- Haygate Road incorporating the junction with Bridge Road and Wrekin Road
- Wrekin Road incorporating the junction with Holyhead Road
- Glebe Streeet incorporating the roundabout with High Street

Telford & Wrekin Council say it's working closely with partners to develop a traffic management plan.

Work is planned to be carried out on the Wellington circulatory road using a temporary one way system, which would encircle the town centre using Vineyard Road, King Street, Victoria Road, Wrekin Road and Bridge Street.

Telford & Wrekin Council is currently working on a signing and street furniture scheme for the “ring road” and will provide more details at the drop in session on how it will take advantage of the temporary traffic management to upgrade what is currently there.

Major junctions and roundabouts will be resurfaced using night closures, once the one way system is removed.

Works will be undertaken on the outlying roads using traffic lights and lane closures where appropriate.

Where it is unavoidable, short term, sectional road closures will be used to enable resurfacing to take place.

Major junctions will be resurfaced and link roads prepared for next year’s surface dressing programme. Preparations will include minor kerb adjustments, structural patching and ironwork replacement.

Councillor Shaun Davies, cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, Employment and Skills, said: “This represents part of an extremely significant investment by Telford & Wrekin Council in the quality of our highways and is a major piece of work.

“I appreciate that this will in some cases cause inconvenience and disruption but we will do our very best to keep this to an absolute minimum. I would like to thank everyone in advance for their co-operation and patience while this work is being undertaken.”

Information regarding the works will also be available online at www.telford.gov.uk/wellingtonroadworks and there will also be social media updates.
