Shrewsbury MP to ask for fairer Shropshire school funding

Daniel Kawczynski MP is to ask a question at Prime Minister’s Question Time today in a bid to secure changes to school funding arrangements.

Shrewsbury MP to ask for fairer Shropshire school funding

The Shrewsbury & Atcham MP has lobbied for many years for changes in the funding mechanism for schools to address the disparity of funding received by schools in Shropshire compared with those in more urban areas of the country.

Daniel Kawczynski said:

“Children that go to school in Shropshire receive significantly less funding than those in other parts of the country and I believe this is unfair. In the financial year 2013-14 Shropshire Council is receiving just £4,112 Schools Block funding per pupil compared with £5,218 in nearby Birmingham and £8,595 in the City of London. Our children should receive an equal amount for their educational needs.

“I welcome the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s spending review commitment to address the inequalities of the current funding system by implementing a national funding formula and I will ask the Prime Minister today to commit to working with MP’s to ensure that Government plans come to fruition.

“I will continue to work with Shropshire Council and their schools forum to ensure these new arrangements are working to benefit schools within my constituency.”
