A body was recovered from the River Severn in Bridgnorth this afternoon after a swimmer went missing whilst with friends early yesterday evening.

Police called off their search for 20-year-old Damian Southall from Wombourne, who disappeared whilst swimming with friends at around 5.30pm last night.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Bridgnorth with a major search taking place until light faded last night. A search was resumed at dayllight this morning.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police, said:

“The body was located at around 1.30pm by the Avon and Somerset Police underwater search team near the spot where he was last seen.”

Police will continue their inquiries into the circumstances leading up to the tragedy.

His family have been informed.

The Shropshire coroner Mr John Ellery has been informed and a post mortem will be held in due course.

Police have previously warned of the dangers of swimming in rivers, quarry pools and lakes during the hot weather.

Inspector Reilly said: “We would again urge people not to be tempted. Such waters may appear inviting but can be extremely dangerous, often with strong currents or hidden obstacles.”
