Those interested in the recently closed Shrewsbury prison will be able to take a tour in September as the former jail opens its doors to the public.

Former HMP Shrewsbury to open as part of heritage weekend

The 136 year old Shropshire prison was one of seven shut by the Ministry of Justice earlier this year to cut costs. Since its closure, many residents have expressed an interest in having the opportunity to look around the iconic building before another use is found for it.

Daniel Kawczynski MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham said:

“Ever since the announcement that HMP Shrewsbury was to close, I have been in discussions with the Ministry of Justice to ensure that before the building is put to another use, officials would permit the opening up of the prison for public tours. I am delighted that the people of Shrewsbury will now have the opportunity to see inside a building that has been a significant part in our town’s history.”

The open days on 14 and 15 September will be carried out in association with Heritage Open Days, a charitable organisation aligned with the National Trust that works with organisations to celebrate England’s architecture and culture by offering free access to places that are usually closed to the public.

Attendance at the open days will be strictly by advanced ticket allocation, information will be made available through the Heritage Open Days website www.heritageopendays.org.uk.
