New homes to bring affordable housing boost to Oswestry
A partnership between Shropshire Housing Alliance (SHA) and The Wrekin Housing Trust is to provide 30 new affordable homes for local people in Oswestry.
The Wrekin Housing Trust is working on a scheme of 14 new two-bedroom houses and bungalows on Middleton Road that will be available for affordable rent. Plans for the scheme have taken on board residents’ suggestions and have used local knowledge to ensure the properties will suit the demand in the area. The bungalows will be made available for the active elderly people in the area. Work is hoped to start shortly.
As well as these new homes, Shropshire Housing Alliance is working with the developer to convert the former Tax Office on the same site into 16 apartments, which they will then lease and rent to local people who need affordable, modern and energy-efficient homes.
This is just one of a number of projects that the two companies are working on together. Recently both organisations were awarded Empty Homes Funding to breathe new life into empty properties and the communities surrounding them. As part of this, SHA are purchasing two buildings in Cross Street, Oswestry which will be used for apartments and housing advice services.
The Wrekin Housing Trust is also working on two further developments in the Oswestry area, one at Plas Fynnon, which will provide three new three-bedroom family homes and another in the village of St Martins for 12 new homes. The Trust is working closely with the local community and parish council to make sure that the homes they are providing make a real difference to the local community.
One resident in the area who has already been helped by the Trust is Ms Roberts, who lives in a three-bedroom Trust home in West Felton. She said: “Homes like ours don’t come along in the area very often so we were thrilled to get it. It’s a lovely spacious home with a garden for the children and we’re really happy.”
