Extra police on duty for Shrewsbury v Wolves match
A large-scale policing operation will be in force for Shrewsbury’s League One fixture with Wolves this afternoon.

Around 200 officers will be on duty for the local derby which is expected to attract a sell-out crowd of more than 9,000 when the game kicks off at 1pm.
Chief Inspector Dave McWilliam, the match day commander, said: “It is important we have sufficient officers in and around the ground to support club safety staff, as well as in Shrewsbury town centre to deal with any outbreaks of disorder.
“We are hoping the day will not be marred by trouble but anyone causing problems or involved in disorder, is likely to be arrested.”
He said genuine supporters of both sides wanted to attend the game without fear of violence. “This is a special sporting occasion and real fans will want to enjoy it without disturbance.
“We also want to ensure others in Shrewsbury can go about their business without interference.”
Chief Inspector McWilliam said the match was all-ticket and kick-off had been brought forward by Shrewsbury Town FC.
He said officers had been called in from all over the West Mercia Police force area as well as from Warwickshire, its Alliance partner. Talks had also been held with colleagues at West Midlands Police who were providing “spotters” on the day to identify known troublemakers.
“We are working very closely in partnership with Shrewsbury Town FC who will have a large number of stewards on duty in the stadium.
“The police will not tolerate anybody arriving at the stadium or in the town with the intention of engaging in disorder. We will treat people fairly but firmly where necessary. Anyone arrested is likely to be charged and put before the court, facing a sentence almost certain to include a long football banning order.”
Chf Insp McWilliam added that supporters should arrive in good time to avoid last-minute congestion and should check the Shrewsbury Town website for information on parking.
He also urged people without tickets not to travel. “Tickets are not being sold on match day so they will not be able to get into the stadium.”
Full match commentary will be on BBC Radio Shropshire from 1pm.
