Police are seeking witnesses after two cars were stolen overnight from Oswestry homes, they believe they were taken by the same offenders.

In both cases, burglars broke into the homes to take the ignition keys before making off.

They stole a red Land Rover Freelander, registration W0051S from the drive of a home in Lower Minster, Oswestry between 9pm last night and 7am today.

Entry was gained via the back door and the keys stolen from the kitchen.

The Freelander was recovered after a resident of Stoney Road in Treflach, Oswestry reported shortly before 8am that a vehicle had been abandoned in the road with a rear wheel broken off.

A few minutes earlier, a resident of Offa’s Close in Treflach discovered his blue Mercedes C250, registration L010HWY, missing from his drive. Again, the keys had been stolen from the kitchen by burglars who also stole a mobile phone and wallet.

Detective Constable Steve Davies, the investigating officer, said: “We believe the Mercedes was stolen at some point between midnight and 7.20am today, almost certainly by those who had taken the Freelander.

“I am appealing for any information concerning the movements of these two vehicles in the two areas concerned. If anyone spotted either car being driven, or people acting suspiciously, please contact Shrewsbury police station on 101.”

Anyone with information about the offenders can also contact the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111, for which a reward may be paid.
