Police have appealed for information after an elderly married couple were burgled in their Ironbridge home as they slept.

Ironbridge home burgled while couple slept

The incident occurred at an address on Wesley Road, sometime between 11.30pm on Wednesday 9 October and 7am on Thursday 10 October.

Thieves entered the property through a rear door and then carried out a thorough search of the downstairs rooms – the kitchen, the living room and the conservatory. Once they had searched downstairs, they crept upstairs and entered two bedrooms and searched them, taking a number of items from the property.

A police spokesman said:

“The elderly occupants of this house – who are both in their 80s – were asleep when this burglary occurred and they have been left very shaken by it. They are also extremely upset about the items that were stolen.

“Among the items that were taken by the thieves were a 37inch flat screen television and a handbag containing a variety of personal documents and around £30 in cash.

“However, the items the victims are most upset about losing are two brooches that were given to the 83-year-old woman who lives at the address by her Grandmother when they were in Holland during the Second World War. The value of these brooches is not known but the sentimental value is ‘priceless’.

“Although it is not clear how the thieves entered the house in this case, we would like to remind people how important it is that they ensure their doors and windows are closed, and locked if possible, when they go to bed.

“The vast majority of burglaries occur because homes are left insecure and therefore it’s vital that people do all they can to protect themselves from unwanted visitors.

“Anyone who believes they may have information about this burglary is asked to call police officers in Telford on 101 or 0300 333 3000, quoting incident number 88S 101013. Crimestoppers can be called anonymously on 0800 555 111.
