Shropshire has escaped the worst of the stormy weather predicted to hit the county overnight.

Shropshire escapes stormy weather

An amber weather warning had been covering south Shropshire for strong winds, whilst a yellow warning of heavy rain was in force for the whole of the county.

The storm which could have brought high winds and heavy rain tracked around 50 miles further south than predicted.

Around 10mm of rain fell in Shropshire overnight with a number of rivers on flood alert. In Buildwas a tree came down on Buildwas causing problems for drivers.

For the latest information on Flooding in Shropshire see the Environment Agency website.

Southern England Hit
The storm hit the South West during the early hours of this morning, it brought winds in excess of 90mph and torrential rain.

The storm felled trees, cut power supplies to up to 40,000 people and damaged vehicles.

Gusts of 99mph have been recorded at the Needles on the Isle of Wight, according to the Met Office, while the Environment Agency has put in place 19 flood warnings and 147 flood alerts.

In Newhaven, East Sussex, the family of a 14-year-old boy who was swept into the sea were said to be "distraught" after coastguard rescuers were forced to call off their search.

Most train operators cancelled all services in the south of England before 9am.
