Armistice Day marked across Shropshire with silence
Shropshire is today remembering the armistice signed by the Allies of World War I for the cessation of hostilities of the Western Front.
The day has become one of remembrance in which everyone is able to remember those who have died during times of war.
In Shrewsbury the Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Jon Tandy, will join British Legion representatives in the Square at 10.45am. A maroon will sound loudly at precisely 11am to mark the two minutes silence.
He said: “I feel it is so important to remember those who gave their lives and the best way I can do that is by attending these services and wearing my poppy with pride. I would encourage Shrewsbury residents to come out and join me in the Square on Armistice Day, everyone is welcome.”
Shropshire Council staff and councillors will gather in the centre quadrangle at Shirehall, Shrewsbury at 11am to remember those who lost their lives in the service of their country.
In particular they will be commemorating council staff that died during the two World Wars. Councillor Malcolm Pate, the Chairman of the Council, will lay a wreath on the Memorial Stones which commemorate them.
