Oakengates fitness suite to close for half million pound refurb
Telford & Wrekin Council is set to invest nearly half a million pounds in an extensive refurbishment of the aspirations fitness suite at Oakengates Leisure Centre.
The money will be spent on a combination of works and equipment and will mean that the gym will be closed from Monday November 25 until mid January.
The project will include extending the gym across the majority of the first floor, and building a folding partition between the current fitness suite and nrgize room to provide a separate facility when required. A dedicated fitness testing and consultation room is also being provided.
In addition, the gym will be equipped with more than 65 brand new cardio and resistance equipment from leading fitness equipment provider Cybex.
The improvements are the first phase of a programme of wider improvements planned as part of the investment into the site. Other planned works include the refurbishment of the pool changing rooms and refurbishment of the sports hall.
Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet member for Leisure Services and Culture, said: “I am delighted that this full refurbishment will bring Oakengates up to the standard of the borough’s other Whole Life Health and Fitness Suites.
“The work will provide a fantastic environment for people to exercise in and reflects our commitment to increase opportunities for everyone to be physically active and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
“I would like to apologise to users that we have to close the current gym while the work is being done but every effort is being made to minimise disruption.
“We have chosen this time of year because December is typically the quietest month and we hope to have the new Whole Life Health and Fitness Suite open by mid January.
“All other activities remain unaffected and the exercise class programme will continue throughout the closure as advertised.”
Gym users can continuing exercising by visiting Wellington Civic and Leisure Centre, Abraham Darby Sports Centre or the new facilities at Phoenix Sports and Leisure Centre while Oakengates is closed.
